LeadVille 100 Mountain Bike Race Started, No Lance Armstrong, David Wiens is Favored
The Leadville 100 mountain bike race will take place in Leadville, Colorado. It will start at 6:30 a.m local time. More than 1500 racers are participating in Leadville 100. They come from 48 states and 21 different countries. But among the huge number of racers, one name is missing: Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong was the Leadville 100 champion in 2009. He wrote a record-setting time of 6:28:50. Armstrong was scheduled to participate in this year's race, but had to be pulled out earlier due to a lingering hip injury from the Tour de France. But Armstrong's absence will not be a big disappointment, as many other big racers such as Dave Wiens, Matt Shriver, and Levi Leipheimer are lining up on the start-line. Dave Wiens is a six-time Leadville champion, and has a popular title of "the man who beat Lance", when he managed to defeat Lance who finished second in 2008. Matt Shriver is the racer who finished third in 2009, just behind Dave Wiens who finished second, half hour behind Armstrong. The Leadville 100 race is not really a 100 miles long. It actually 104 miles long, starting at 10,500 feet to a peak of 12,600 feet and back again, finish at where it started. The trail in Leadville is not really technically challenging. It's the altitude that will test the endurance of the riders, specially when they climbing back to finish line.
