Gene Tierney as Laura

Has there ever been a woman so beautiful that a man could fall in love with her portrait? In the movie Laura, Dana Andrew’s character, Mark McPherson, investigates the apparent murder of Laura. After interviewing the usual suspects, McPherson returns to the scene of the murder. McPherson tosses the apartment for clues, perhaps lingering a bit too long while going though her things in the bedroom, and then pours himself a drink. The detective dozes off underneath the portrait of the stunning Laura and begins to dream.
McPherson is awakened by the real Laura, not a ghost, but certainly not a murder victim. Of course after falling in love with the portrait it stands to reason the detective will win the heart of Laura in the end. The movie cast consisted of a wealth of talented actors, Dana Andrews, Vincent Price, Clifton Webb, and Judith Anderson. Webb would be nominated for an Academy Award for his efforts.

Gene Tierney as Laura

By far, the star of the show, the Lady in the Portrait, was Gene Tierney. Laura was the breakout role for Tierney and the film for which she is most remembered. Before Laura, Tierney had stared in one B-movie after another with little recognition of her talent or beauty. Although she had done a commendable job in such films as The Return of Frank James and The Shanghai Gesture, Tierney’s performance in Laura brought her to the attention of the general public.
