The White House gave the media a photo taken by a White House photographer.

But photographers and reporters traveling with the president over the weekend were angry to learn that they had been excluded from documentation swimming Obama, who had become a politicized issue by the BP oil spill. By opting into the water, the president was making a symbolic gesture that the waters of the Gulf of Mexico were in fact safe for recreational use.

The distinction has led to accusations of cheating and debate about whether swimming been the object symbolism. See the links at the bottom of this article.)

The photographers have complained that the White House too often distributes its own photos of presidential events, while not allowing news photographers to attend.
For photographers, a photo taken by the White House is similar to the reprinting of a press release, and many news organizations refuse to use such photos. The Associated Press does not distribute the photo of the president’s swim Saturday. An AP spokesman Paul Colford said that generally, the service “is not distributed a booklet of photos when we could so easily have taken the picture.”
